Mímir and the Well, Brunnr
Beneath the roots of Yggdrasil hid MimisBrunnr, the sacred well of knowledge, guarded by Mímir, the wisest of the gods. Even Odin, the Allfather, frequently sought Mímir's counsel for he recognized that the power that knowledge represents.
Odin's Sacrifice
In time, Odin sought to drink from the well itself. In exchange for a single sip from the enchanted waters of MimisBrunnr, Mimir demanded Odin plucked out one of his own eyes. Until Ragnarök, all would see Odin's sacrifice any time they looked upon him.
Death of a God
During the Aesir-Vanir war, Mímir was sent to the giants as a hostage. But, when he guarded his knowledge so closely that he refused to share his secrets with the giants even as they beheaded him!
Whispering Secrets
Odin recovered the severed head of his friend and mentor Mímir. By preserving it with special herbs and powerful enchantments, Mímir continued to whisper the secrets of the universe into Odin's ear, even after death.
